Family Therapy & Counseling in Casa Grande & Maricopa, AZ
Rebuilding Connection, Strengthening Communication, and Healing Family Dynamics
When one member of a family struggles, the entire family feels the impact. Whether navigating recurring conflicts, major life transitions, behavioral challenges, domestic violence or grief, finding a path forward together can feel overwhelming.
At Serendipitous Path, PLLC, we provide a safe, neutral, and supportive space where families can slow down, truly hear one another, and create healthier, lasting patterns of connection.
Our Approach to Family Counseling
We believe that lasting healing occurs within the family system. Our clinicians, Julie Skelton, LCSW and Samantha Irey, LMSW, combine play therapy with traditional family counseling using experiential techniques, collaborative problem-solving, and strength-based models.
Rather than placing blame on a single individual, we look at the interactional patterns and systemic stressors affecting the whole household.
How We Help Families:
Improving Communication: Replacing destructive arguments and withdrawal with healthy, productive expression.
Parent-Child & Teen Dynamics: Navigating difficult behaviors, school challenges, power struggles, and boundary setting with empathy.
Blended Families & Life Transitions: Supporting families through divorce, remarriage, moving, new siblings, or changes in caregiving roles.
Adoption & Attachment Support: Specialized guidance for adoptive families, foster transitions, and attachment repair.
Neurodivergent Family Support: Practical strategies for households balancing ADHD, Autism, sensory sensitivities, and differing communication styles.
Grief, Loss & Trauma: Providing unified support when families face unexpected loss, caregiver burnout, or community trauma.
Rebuilding After Domestic Violence: Helping families learn how to create new roles in their family and escape the maladaptive roles that the domestic violence created.
Integrative & Experiential Techniques for All Ages
Standard talk therapy can sometimes feel intimidating or stagnant for children and teens. To make sessions engaging and productive for everyone, we often integrate:
Play Therapy Techniques: Using games and collaborative activities, we help families recognize patterns in communication that are causing problems and allow them safe spaces to learn new ways to work together while having fun.
Adlerian & Strength-Based Interventions: Encouraging courage, responsibility, and mutual respect among family members.
Collaborative Problem Solving: Helping parents and youth identify lagging skills and unresolved problems together rather than relying solely on reward/punishment systems.
Experiential Activities & Sand Tray: Using guided metaphors and visual exercises to help family members express feelings that are hard to put into words.
Prepare/Enrich Framework: Building stronger foundations for parents and couples navigating parenting disagreements.
What to Expect in Family Sessions
Initial Assessment & Goal Setting: We meet to understand your family’s unique history, strengths, current stressors, and shared goals.
Interactive Sessions: Depending on your needs, sessions may involve the entire family, parent-only consultations, or targeted parent-child dyads.
Actionable Takeaways: You will leave sessions with concrete communication tools, boundary frameworks, and practical routines to practice at home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all family members need to attend every session?
Not necessarily. While whole-family sessions are common, your therapist may recommend alternating between full family sessions, parent-only check-ins, or individual sessions with a child or teen to best support the overarching goals.
Can family therapy help if my child is already in individual therapy?
Yes. We believe the best success is found by helping the family system, both individually and as a family unit, to develop new ways to work together. Nobody lives in isolation, and therapy should not happen in isolation either, if possible.
